WEIGHT LOSS & MAINTENANCE DURING COVID-19
During the pandemic, our job is to ensure our patients stay as safe as possible during any interaction; consultation, procedures and follow up appointments.
Covid 19 procedures
Many have experienced significant weight gain due to the stress, anxiety and lack of exercise created by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent orders to stay at home. Some patients may not wish to undergo a major surgical procedure at the moment. We are therefore pleased to offer non-surgical programs to help patients manage their weight during this challenging time.
We have minimised the potential transmission of COVID by implementing strict protocols to reduce possible spread. We provide remote online consultations. St Johns & St Elizabeth Hospital is a Covid free/negative hospital, meaning that staff are tested regularly and that patients are strictly tested before admission, amongst other protocols, to create a safe environment.
Covid 19 and excess weight / obesity
Recent medical studies have found a concerning link between excess weight and COVID 19. The conclusion of these studies is that obesity and excess weight nearly doubles the risk for severe COVID outcomes. However, reducing BMI (body mass index) by just an average of 5 points (for the average woman and man; approx. 12-16 Kgs) could cut requirement of ICU-level care by half.
